Writing Prompt 011

“You really have no clue who I am?”

“You’d think the confused looks and blank stare would have answered that for you.”

She ducked her head and sighed. I didn’t want to hurt her, but I was confused and I hated when people stated the obvious. And, I really had no idea who she was.

“I’m your mother.”

It was my turn to be shocked. I just stared at her, my eyes suddenly dry and painful. My chest constricted and I couldn’t breathe.

My mother? How could this be? The woman standing before me was my mother? The one who had died saving her daughter, me? This woman was my mother?

I drew in a shuddering breath. My shock turning to anger, red hot and burning. All this time, I had thought my mom was some hero who had given her life for mine. She had saved me and in so doing lost her life. But now, here she stood before me, alive and well.

“So why are you here? You obviously wanted nothing to do with me before.” My stinging tongue which I often wielded as a sword was extra sharp with the bitterness I felt. The pain in her blue eyes, which I now realized were much like mine, was palpable.

“I wanted to, you know, see you and how you’ve grown up. You are a beautiful young lady.” She looked me directly in the eye.

I sneered. “Much you know about it.” I turned and started to walk away.

“You may not understand this, but I love you, and have always loved you. It was for you that I gave you up.”

How do you believe someone who has lied to you?

This writing prompt kind of made itself. It was one of those things where I just started writing with really no goal at first and this is what it morphed into.

Let me know what you thought in the comments below!
