The darkness started to close in and she felt like damp tendrils caressed her shoulders, sending a shiver down her spine. She held the lamp aloft with a shaking hand.
Why had her father sent her out on her own? He knew she hated the dark, knew that she was afraid of it. It was hard to see beyond the glow of the lamp, and her steps were tentative as she swiveled her head from side to side, searching, probing the shadowed trees for anything that might pose a threat to her. Imaginings of shadowy figures lurking behind this branch, or just around that tree, caused her heart to beat even faster than it already was. Memories of stories she had heard or read of dark masked men jumping from behind trees and grabbing their victims caused her to shudder and tears of fright to fill her eyes. All this agony over a lost cow.
Have you ever been scared of the dark? Did you like this prompt? Let me know what you thought in the comments below!
Also, as a short side note: After several requests and great feedback from last weeks prompt (which you can read here if you missed it) I am going to be turning it into a serial on my blog! I am very excited about it and have already started work on it. I would like to get a little bit ahead before I post, that way I can be regular about giving the installments to you instead of leaving you hanging for weeks on end, so it may be a few weeks before you get part one.
By God’s Grace,
