4 out of 5 stars
This is the fourth book in the Blades of Acktar series by Tricia Mingerink.
The story was exciting, full of the many characters we have come to know and love over the course of this series and a perfect finish for the series. The plot was a little slow at first, but picked up speed and by the end I was staying up late into the night to finish. I love how Tricia does such an amazing job of making a medieval country so realistic, with it’s political details, down to how they affect the average person. I really enjoyed Martyn’s storyline and his struggles as he dealt with how to handle himself after the war was over. Indeed, I enjoyed how everyone struggled to find their place and their purpose after the war was won.
As usual for Tricia Mingerink’s stories, the characters were well rounded, with solid arcs and deep backstories, history, and chemistry. Martyn was the MC for this one, and she did such a good job of describing his problems, doubts and anger. Leith and Renna were adorable, Brandi and Jamie still my favorites of all time, and Shadrach Alistair? My friends, that dude rocks.
Again, started off a bit slow, but definitely picked up the pace. The last half of the book’s pacing was perfect and had me excited and dreading it by turns.
The message behind the book was expertly told through Martyn’s story line. I thought she handled his rejection, pain, and need to follow a master quite well with the perfect scripture and encouragement interwoven throughout.
A few things here. The one struggle that I have had with the entire series is the graphicness of it’s violence. Certain things just don’t need to be described and could easily be implied. For instance, (I don’t think this is a spoiler because it happened in the previous book) there are some descriptions of a decapitated body that were entirely unnecessary and rather shocking. I don’t mind the normal, run of the mill descriptions of wounds, or injuries, but that was a little overkill. That, and one or two other moments of violence and bloodshed made me cringe, but I will say that I am a little more sensitive than most when it comes to those things. But, they could have easily been omitted without taking away from the story, and implication instead of description is sometimes better. This is the reason that I knocked one star off the rating.
I enjoyed the ending to this series thoroughly! Bravo to Tricia Mingerink to giving a satisfying ending with enough room to still see the characters carrying on with their lives. And thank goodness for a happy ending. I hate sad ones and this one didn’t disappoint. If you enjoy non-magical fantasy, medieval tales with plenty of swashbuckling and adventure, then you will greatly enjoy this book and the series!
